The study of Latin America from

an interdisciplinary perspective.

Latin America and the Caribbean represent a dynamic region spanning 7.5 million square miles and home to over 680 million people. As an economic powerhouse, Brazil ranks as the world's ninth-largest economy, while Mexico stands as the 12th largest globally and the second-largest trading partner of the United States. Argentina is a key player in global agriculture, being one of the top producers and exporters of meat, grains, and cereals.  The region overall is rich in critical and rare earth minerals—vital commodities for the future. Chile leads the world with its vast reserves of copper and together with Bolivia and Argentina possess the largest reserves of  lithium, essential for the energy transition.

The Caribbean, with its extensive oceanic territory, is central to developing the "blue economy," contributing a quarter of the world's oceanic economic activity. Known for its stunning beaches and rich cultural heritage, the Caribbean remains a top global tourist destination.

The ties between Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States are deeply rooted, with over 40 million Spanish speakers in the U.S., comprising nearly 13% of its population.

The region navigates a landscape of significant challenges and opportunities. Despite ongoing problems such as inequality, violence, and threats to democracy, the region is making remarkable progress in areas like women's and Indigenous political representation, poverty alleviation, innovative urban planning, and creative approaches to climate change and environmental sustainability.

Latin America and the Caribbean are at a crossroads and represent a vital area of study for those interested in global affairs, social, economic and political development, and cultural exchange.
